ORIGIN — The Threshold of the Guidebook
Before any oracle can speak, there must be an origin.
Not a beginning, beginnings are too clean, too optimistic, but an origin: the place where matter, memory, and myth first collide. The place where life becomes symbolic. The place where the underworld years stop being punishment and start becoming material.
This collage marks that place for me.
It isn’t a card in the deck because it isn’t an archetype.
It’s the doorway you walk through before the archetypes begin.
It’s the tunnel.
The hum.
The metal.
The years spent underground before the psyche remembers it can rise.
The Nickel Years — A Life in the Underworld
Traditional alchemy never gave nickel a throne. It wasn’t one of the seven metals of antiquity. It wasn’t mapped to a planet. It wasn’t woven into the cosmology of transformation. Nickel was the outsider “the devil’s metal” the ore miners cursed when they tried to extract copper and found only stubborn, unyielding matter.
Nickel is the metal of misidentification.
Nickel is the metal of being misunderstood.
Nickel is the metal of being trapped in the wrong story.
For forty‑four years, that was the metal I lived inside.
Not copper.
Not silver.
Not gold.
Nickel, the underworld alloy. The years where I felt stuck in matter, stuck in survival, stuck in the devil’s version of my life instead of my own.
Alchemy teaches that before chrysopoeia (the making of gold), there is argyropoeia (the making of silver). But before silver, there is the raw, unrecognized metal, the part of the story where you don’t yet know you’re transforming.
That is what this collage holds.
The nickel years.
The underworld.
The hum of trains.
The patchwork jacket.
The surreal head.
The flowers carried through darkness.
The sign that reads ORIGIN.
This is the moment before the deck begins.
Poem: Origin - The Nickel Years
I sat forty‑four years
in the underground hum,
where metal sings low
and the devil keeps time
with the clatter of trains.
I learned the weight of matter,
how copper dreams of gold,
how silver is a promise
you make to yourself
before you know you’re making it.
My jacket was patchwork living,
stitched from every season
I survived without applause.
My face was a myth in progress,
drawn wrong on purpose
so I could grow into it later.
Still, I held flowers.
Even in the nickel years,
I carried something soft
through the iron corridors
and called it mine.
Now the sign before me reads
ORIGIN….
not an exit, not an ending,
but the place where the story
finally remembers its author.
You’ve already stepped through the door.
Not into the devil’s realm,
but into the place I built from poems,
art, breath,
and the quiet refusal
to stay underground forever.
Why This Image Opens the Guidebook
Every oracle deck has a cosmology, a worldview, a symbolic structure, a way of understanding transformation. Mine begins here, in the underworld, because that’s where my life began to change. Not in the light, not in the gold, but in the matter.
This collage is the hinge between my lived story and the symbolic system you’re about to enter. It’s the reminder that every reader, every seeker, every person who picks up this deck has their own nickel years, the seasons where they were misunderstood, unseen, or misnamed.
The deck doesn’t start with transcendence.
It starts with matter.
It starts with origin.
It starts with the recognition that your story has weight, and that weight is the material of transformation.
A Portal Already Crossed
You’ve already stepped through the doorway.
The QR code in the collage wasn’t meant as decoration, it was the first alchemical act. A modern threshold. A hidden passage, just like the old alchemists believed existed between metals, symbols, and states of being.
By scanning it, you left the subway scene behind and entered the inner chamber of the work, the poems, the art, the book, the cosmology that shapes this deck.
You’ve already enacted the journey the deck invites you into:
matter → meaning → myth.
You crossed from the nickel years into the symbolic realm simply by choosing to see more.
Entering the Oracle
This blog is the first step.
This collage is the first threshold.
The poem is the first invocation.
From here, the deck will unfold its archetypes, not as predictions, but as mirrors. Not as answers, but as alchemical stages. Not as fortune‑telling, but as a map of emergence.
Welcome to the origin.
Welcome to the work.
Welcome to the place where nickel begins to remember it can become something else.
