Behind the Card: The Making of The Lovers — Fractured Union

How a lightning strike, a tree, and two distorted figures became a revelation about truth, polarity, and the burning away of false selves.

There are cards in a deck that arrive quietly, forming themselves through sketches, color studies, and slow intuition.

And then there are cards that crack open the room.

The Lovers — Fractured Union was one of those cards.

It didn’t come gently. It came like a rupture, a moment where the inner world split open and demanded to be seen. This card wasn’t built from romance or harmony or the soft glow of connection. It was built from truth, the kind that strikes like lightning and leaves nothing untouched.

This is the story of how it came into being.

⚡ The Moment the Lightning Appeared

The first element that arrived was the lightning, not as destruction, but as plasma.

I didn’t want a bolt that simply tore things apart. I wanted the kind of lightning that transforms matter into light, the kind that reveals what was hidden, the kind that burns away illusion.

Plasma became the perfect metaphor:

  • truth that cannot be ignored

  • sudden clarity

  • the ignition point of the real self

  • the rubedo flash of alchemy

When I drew it, I wasn’t thinking about whether. I was thinking about revelation, the kind that hits the core of your identity and shows you exactly where the fracture is.

This lightning wasn’t meant to kill the tree.

It was meant to illuminate it.

🌳 The Tree as the Core Self

The tree came next, almost without effort. It felt like the spine of the card, the axis of the inner world, the place where identity roots itself.

I placed it in the center because that’s where truth strikes first.

The tree symbolizes:

  • your values

  • your emotional foundation

  • your sense of self

  • the structure that holds your inner world upright

When the plasma bolt hits, it exposes what’s unstable, untrue, or misaligned.

Not to destroy it, but to reveal it.

This was important to me:

The tree survives.

The false selves do not.

🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️ The Distorted Figures and the Collapse of False Harmony

The figures were the hardest part.

I knew they represented the inner masculine and feminine, the intuitive/emotional self and the logical/active self. But I didn’t want them standing in harmony. I didn’t want the traditional Lovers imagery. I wanted the truth of what happens when inner polarity is out of sync.

So I distorted them.

I pulled them away from each other.

I let their forms echo and blur.

I let their bodies show the fracture before their faces ever could.

Their distortion represents:

  • misalignment

  • inner conflict

  • the split between what you feel and what you do

  • the collapse of false harmony

The lightning forces them into honesty.

There’s no pretending here.

No projection.

No fantasy.

Just truth.

🔥 Burning Away the False Selves

This became the heart of the card.

As I worked, I kept thinking about the masks we wear, the roles, the coping identities, the stories we tell ourselves to keep relationships or inner balance intact. The Lovers card, in its traditional form, often celebrates union. But this version reveals what happens when union is built on illusion.

The plasma flash burns away:

  • the personas

  • the emotional patterns

  • the fantasies

  • the projections

  • the false versions of your inner masculine and feminine

What remains is the real polarity, even if it’s fractured.

This card doesn’t promise harmony.

It promises honesty.

💔 The Truth at the Center

When I stepped back from the finished piece, the message was unmistakable:

A foundational truth has struck your inner world.

The misalignment between your inner masculine and feminine is visible now, in your choices, your relationships, your emotional patterns. The false selves have fallen away. What remains is real.

This card doesn’t ask you to fix the fracture.

It asks you to face it.

🌗 The Upright and Shadow Meanings

As I wrote the guidebook text, the meanings emerged naturally from the imagery.

Upright

  • seeing the real state of a relationship

  • recognizing inner polarity imbalance

  • choosing truth over fantasy

  • entering emotional honesty

  • letting false selves fall away

Shadow

  • clinging to illusions

  • avoiding the truth

  • acting from wounded polarity

  • mistaking collapse for failure

  • feeling destabilized after revelation

The card doesn’t punish.

It clarifies.

🌞 The Light Meaning: Rebuilding from Truth

The light meaning came last, the part that speaks to what happens after the lightning.

Rebuilding your inner masculine and feminine from a place of truth.

Choosing alignment over fantasy.

Standing in your real identity, not your coping identity.

This is the beginning of authentic union within yourself.

🌿 What the Card Feels Like

When I hold this card, it feels like:

  • the flash of lightning that shows everything as it truly is

  • the heat of truth burning through old patterns

  • the collapse of false harmony

  • the moment your inner world becomes illuminated

  • the start of rebuilding from what’s real

It’s not a soft card.

But it’s a liberating one.

✨ The Message That Emerged

“The truth has struck your core. What was false has burned away. Now you must rebuild from what is real.”

This became the oracle message, the distilled essence of the card.
